Next Step in Hand Surgery

kadyhinojosa

Hello friends!

After 11 days, I finally got that monstrous soft cast off my hand today...YAY! As I mentioned in my last blog, it was very awkward doing basic things like tying my tennis shoes and buttoning my jacket! Actually, I could only wear Jose's jacket for warmth, that's the only thing the cast could get through. (LOL!) I'm so grateful to him for helping wherever I needed help.

This happens to be the month that Jose and I are ushers at our church. Keep in mind that the only shirts I could wear with that cast were t-shirts. None of my long-sleeve shirts worked because I couldn't get my hand through the sleeve. I've been wearing leggings and t-shirts for the past 11 days and Jose's jacket when I went outside because it's been cold. So last Sunday at church, I wore nice pants and a sleeveless nice shirt and Jose's jacket. I took the jacket off inside and wasn't too cold during the service so it worked. You do what ya' gotta do.

So the cast came off this morning.

The nurse removed 5 stitches, I thought it looked like more than that to me.

My thumb doesn't bend much from the surgery of course but I could make little circles with it and I could touch my thumb to all digits. It hurt a little when touching my ring and pinkie fingers but not too bad. And I was able to work my wrist a bit...it's stiff because of that cast.

Dr. Gayton was quite pleased with the surgery and with my movement although he of course told me that I needed to be gentle with it so it can heal and he said that keeping myself in check would probably be my biggest challenge. :) I will see him again in 6 months.

After leaving him, I went to physical therapy. The goal today was to fit me with a splint and identify my starting point (pain level, movement now, etc) so we can see my improvement over time.

I have to wear the splint all the time except when showering (yes, I can shower now and get my hand wet). Dr. Gayton did say that I could take it off when sitting down and watching a movie (or whatever) but to go easy with everything.

I chose the pink strips. :)

I don't officially start working with physical therapy until the 27th (3 weeks after surgery).

Needless to say that I will be taking it easy when the splint is off so that I don't have any setbacks. :)

I was told that they would determine how frequently I'll have to meet with them when I see them on the 27th. She said once or twice a week and felt that given how I'm healing and what I can already do, it'll probably be just once a week.

So all is good here. I'm in next to no pain and look forward to my hand healing, getting strength back in my hand, no pain when all of this is done, golfing again, and so much more.

BTW, my surgery was called suspension arthroplasty and my trapezium bone was removed. Below are before and after pictures of my hand. Interesting, right!?!

I love modern medicine!! And I'm so grateful to Dr. Gayton and the entire staff at Ortho SC!
